“A master in the art of living draws no sharp distinction between his work and his play; his labor and his leisure; his mind and his body; his education and his recreation. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence through whatever he is doing, and leaves others to determine whether he is working or playing. To himself, he always appears to be doing both.” Francois Auguste Rene Chateaubriand
Read and Run Daddy is a video, photo and written blog about single parenting with an emphasis on outdoor recreation, environmental stewardship and the healing power of music. Javier Placer is a 16 year outdoor guide/entrepreneur that is the founder and owner /operator of Stand Up Paddle Colorado. SUPCO is the premier SUP outfitter in Colorado with a riverfront location on the banks of the Colorado River in Eagle County and 2 Hubs at the 2 marinas on Lake Dillon in Summit County. SUPCO is a 1% for the Planet company that gives 1% of its gross revenue to local environmental NPO’s.
Javier started his business in 2009 when his daughter Camille was 4 years old. She has been along for the ride ever since spending time with him at the music venue they were based out of and spending nights on the banks of the river in his tipi or 66 VW Bus. Camille has since become an avid paddler on lakes and rivers and has successfully navigated herself down Class II whitewater.
Reading and running is a term used in river navigation when scouting is made impossible because of hazards or inaccessibility on the riverbanks. All one’s accumulated knowledge in the medium comes into play as one reacts and navigates in the moment while the challenges and or obstacles come into view. It is a practice in Zen philosophy because the senses are heightened and one is forced into perfect focus in the present moment. In his blog, “Read and Run Daddy,” Javier uses the metaphor of guiding in the river to parenting. Javier says “many times, in parenting, the lines appear to us in the moment. Sometimes we have no reference other than our instincts and the guiding principal of unconditional love.”
One of the major themes of the Read and Run journey is the teaching of oneself and one’s children to recreate and find solace and activity in nature. Doing so responsibly is a major tenet of this video, travel, music and adventure driven blog. Through proper instruction and leadership, we can inspire a new generation of conscious outdoor enthusiasts to be aware of their surroundings, stewards of the public lands they play in and educated in the mediums they challenge themselves on.
This will be a blog and multi media resource that expands on the day to day living of a single dad, small business owner that raises his daughter with insights from being an outdoor guide for the last 16 years. The blog will feature a weekly video of activities in the outdoors in Maui, Mexico and Colorado with a song recorded by Javier and Camille. There will be daily insights into parenting placed on social media and other platforms that further the values of Read and Run Daddy.
